Quarterly Investment Briefing 101

What is a Quarterly Investment Briefing?

Great question – this is a series of four events and newsletters (Quarterly Investment in Brief) which is part of the Investment Activator Programme led by TechSPARK and supported by 7 public and private sector sponsors (TLT LLP, Smith & Williamson, delaware, Rocketmakers, UWE, Sanderson, Engine Shed, West of England Combined Authority). These events which occur (unsurprisingly) every 3 months, bring together the investment community to:

  • Share good practice
  • Learn together
  • Network and discover opportunities.

These are strictly not pitching events, and are not open to the wider community – just to active and potentially active investors.

The region has a healthy calendar of pitch events (Silicon Gorge, Bristol Tech Day and SETsquared), and opportunities for scale-up founders to learn from investors (at the Engine Shed Investor in Residence days for example). Part of the benefit of the QIB group is to coordinate and advertise these events so if you want to know more about these or advertise an event, please join the QIB distribution list using the link below or contact me directly.

Each event will focus on a specific theme related to investment including angel investment, regional investment and the role of people in investment. The events have a common structure which includes:

  • Lightning talks from experts from inside and beyond the region
  • Insights from Beauhurst scale up data on investment patterns regionally and nationally
  • Discussion and debate to consider how we can employ good practice and invigorate the local ecosystem
  • Updates on those companies currently raising investment.

In 2018 we heard from speakers from UKBAA, Silicon Valley Bank, Invest Bristol + Bath, Shaw & Co, Eden Ventures and Maven Capital. In 2019 we heard from British Business Bank, Deepbridge Capital, SETsquared, UnitDX, Bristol and Bath Regional Capital, angel investors and select founders.

In 2020 the events will take place on Thursday 26th March, Thursday 18th June, and Thursday 17th September and Thursday 3rd December. Speakers will be announced on the EventBrite listings for each event. To RSVP to attend please check out the relevant event listing on EventBrite [LINK TBD]

Who is invited?

The Quarterly Investment Briefing events and newsletters target the investor community - whether angel, VC or funders of funds. To support the event's objectives, founders are not welcome unless they are active investors themselves.

Founders who would like to share their investment proposition with the group are very welcome to do so. Briony collates one page propositions from founders who are raising investment at the time of the events - these are printed and shared, and highlighted in a short presentation to the group.

What principles support the group?

Those who attend the Quarterly Investment Briefing share three common principles:

  • Whoever attends is an active or potentially active investor, or manager of investors – or enabler of investment activity.
  • Whatever is presented is informative, fact-based and regionally relevant.
  • We value the opportunity to learn equally with the opportunity to share.

Instructions for founders...

Founders that are raising investment and wish to submit a one page summary of their proposition should submit a one sided, one page summary to our new Invest West platform at least 48hours before the event (dates listed above): https://platform.investwest.online/groups/qib/signup/issuer You will need to have your logo, one-liner and some top facts about your company to hand.

We recommend the following headings for your one-page, one sided summary:

  • Problem
  • Solution
  • Business Model
  • Market Opportunity
  • Team
  • Journey so far/timeline
  • Ask/Investment Proposition

Please note that your one-page summary will be shared in hard-copy at the QIB event and via a password protected website with a group of c. 300 investors and enablers of investment immediately after the event. Investors are asked to contact you directly if they are interested in your proposition. If you have any queries about the Quarterly Investment Briefing events, please contact briony@techspark.co

The QIB is one part of the Investment Activator Programme (IAP) run by TechSPARK to help improve the flow of capital for startup companies in the region. The IAP offers activities such as a PitchMe! event to help founders perfect their pitch, and a bi-annual Silicon Gorge pitch competition where founders can meet investors. If you would like to request support from the IAP, please complete this very simple form: https://share.hsforms.com/1KIjrQ0kDQjWlYuDAOdYCcA2pgut
