Invigorating the scale up ecosystem

Yesterday I hosted my first event at Engine Shed – the inaugural Scale-up Pow Wow kindly supported by Smith & Williamson. This was an opportunity to bring together those people who are passionate about scale-up businesses and those leading scale-up businesses in the West of England.

We heard from Professor Daniel Isenberg of the Babson Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Project and from Irene Graham, CEO of the ScaleUp Institute. They each provided a different perspective to challenge and inform our region's approach to scale up support. Irene drew on the data from the latest scale up survey (conducted by the Scale up Institute) and Dan shared his indights into the best way to develop a scale up ecosystem.

Now our challenge is to work out how to best drive forward collaboration across the private and public sector to ensure our scale-up ecosystem is one of those that Professor Isenberg is able to cite in his work. I’ll be working on projects specifically around:

Leadership support (finding and working with Non-Exec Directors, Chairmen and a senior team) Peer to peer connections and how to foster the community of scale-up founders Access to finance Availability, affordability and suitability of office space If you want to work together on these projects, whether you were at the Pow Wow, or would like to be at the next one, please get in touch, my details are below.

This blog series tells the story of the Scale-up Enabler, Briony Phillips. Briony joined the Engine Shed team on a 1 year contract in June 2017 funded by Business West, Engine Shed, The University of Bristol and the West of England Growth Hub. This group have a shared ambition – first, to identify scale-up businesses in the West of England region and to better understand their challenges and second, to design, facilitate and support initiatives that will make it easier for businesses to scale-up more effectively – in the long term.
